Ray Gun MK2 A cosmic blaster to eviscerate any and all inter-galactic adversaries! This is one “bad-ass” galactic ray delivery vessel, not for the faint of heart! It’s big, it’s heavy, and it is guaranteed to intimidate!
The idea started in my mind’s eye, where I saw an 8-year-old (or is he 80?) imagining space encounters with aliens from a different planet. Imagine the era of Buck Rogers space travel, when our imaginations outpaced our technology. Why not hang on to a bit of that fun imagery? Alas, art objects don’t just appear by themselves - they have to be made by hand, from scratch. In the case of this new art-toy Ray Gun MK2, I first created a model of it in wood. Once the model was finished to my satisfaction, I made a series of molds in different materials.
After many hours and weeks of work, I came up with a final set of permanent patterns, called match plates. Using these, we can make sand molds and pour bronze and aluminum castings in my foundry. It is immensely satisfying to see what began in my mind’s eye emerge from the sand as solid aluminum or bronze, but the raw castings require machine and hand finishing before final assembly. I have estimated there to be upwards of a dozen different complete operations in making even my simplest little objects.
